About this product
Reishi is not really a food mushroom, and we'd rather say that upfront than let the word "mushroom" on the pack create the wrong expectation. It's genuinely too woody to eat the way you'd eat button or oyster — traditionally it's simmered for hours to extract what it has to offer, not sautéed or added to a curry. In old Chinese texts it's referred to as the "mushroom of immortality," a reputation that speaks to how long it's been used this way, not a claim we're making about what it does.
These are whole dried slices, grown on hardwood logs or sawdust blocks rather than the compost most culinary mushrooms are farmed on, which is part of why the texture is so different — dense, woody, almost bark-like. To use them, simmer a few slices in water on low heat for an hour or more, the longer the better, until the liquid takes on a deep reddish-brown colour and a distinctly bitter, earthy taste. Strain and drink it as a tea, or reduce it further into a concentrated decoction.
We won't attach specific health claims to this pack — reishi sits in traditional and wellness use, not in the same category as a food ingredient with a standard nutrition label, and there isn't a meaningful calorie or protein count to quote here because it isn't eaten as food. Treat it as what it's traditionally been used as: a slow-simmered wellness infusion, not a meal component.
